This book relates unknown and neglected aspects of a famous battle which took place off the coast of Mauritius in August of 1810.

 

Grand Port: Untold Stories unravels the most important mystery of the entire saga � the identity and role of the ‘black pilots’.

 

One  of these pilots, who ably served the British Navy in the battle, met a particularly tragic end.

 

Many years later, this man's fate would lead his former commander, Captain Nesbit Josiah Willoughby, on a quest for redemption. 

 

Captain Willoughby's search in turn let to the revelation of 'Zistwar Jouan', the story of Jouan.

 

Using largely unpublished sources, such as the narratives of Captains Samuel Pym and Lucius Curtis, and private letters of participants,  Grand Port: Untold Stories restores the voice of the unjustly forgotten.

 

 

 
 

The Centre for Research on Indian Ocean Societies [CRIOS] was set up in 1997 by a group of researchers based in Mauritius and with a common interest in the study of the societies of the Indian Ocean region.


The objectives of the Centre are:


(a)  To act as a forum and to organise local and international conferences to discuss social, 

       cultural, and heritage issues.


(b)  To act as a centre for documentation and information on the social sciences as pertaining to

       Mauritius and the Indian Ocean region.


(c)  To act as a consultancy and advisory body on social, cultural and heritage issues.


(d)  To promote and carry out research on the social sciences as pertaining to

       Mauritius and the Indian Ocean region.


(e)  To establish links and to promote collaborative projects with relevant institutions.


(f)  To popularise the shared heritage and cultures of the peoples of the Indian Ocean


(g)  To initiate and promote publications in the above fields.
